Composite Bridge#
Introduction#
This tutorial will guide you through a simple composite bridge project.
Here we will introduce you to our new workflow for the design checks of composite bridges acc. EN 1994-2.
We will focus on the design checks for the main girders.
Other aspects like for example the design checks for the slab in transverse direction, the pier or the bridge bearings are omitted here.
Objectives#

Cross-section definition
System generation

Introduction and System Generation#
In this video we give an overview of the workflow and show you how to create the bridge model for this tutorial.
Note
This tutorial has been set up to provide complete guidance by showing every relevant step of the workflow. Therefore we also explain in detail the modeling of the structure and the definition of loads. Users already familiar with system generation and load definition may skip these points in the videos and focus on the specific aspects for the design checks of composite bridges.
Load Definition#
In this video we show you how to define the actions and loads.
Analysis#
In this video we show you how to do the analysis of the construction process and how to calculate the previously defined loads (e.g. temperature loads and settlements). Furthermore we explain the calculation of traffic loads based on the evaluation of influence lines.
Design Combinations#
Here we show you how to define the design combinations for the design checks in the following videos and how to do the superpositioning.
Ultimate Limit State Design Checks#
In this video we show you two options to carry out the Ultimate Limt State design checks for composite cross-sections.
Serviceability Limit State Design Checks#
In this video we explain how to do the design checks for the stress limitations in the Serviceability Limit State and how to do the checks for the control of cracking.
Shear Forces for Shear Connection#
The following video is about the calculation of longitudinal shear forces for the design of the shear connection between structural steel and concrete. Here we show tools to calculate the shear forces using uncracked sectional properties even in sections where the concrete acts in tension.
Stress Ranges for Fatigue#
In this video we explain how to calculate stress ranges for the fatigue design checks.
