Thermal Analysis of a Coated Steel Section

Introduction

This tutorial deals with a Thermal Analysis of a Coated Steel Section. The geometry of the cross section is entered graphically via cross-section editor CSE in SOFiPLUS.

Note

A basic SOFiSTiK knowledge is required for this tutorial. Inside this tutorial we show only the project specific workflows, which are different from the basic workflow. Please refer to Thermal Analysis of a Steel Section (I-Profile) for the standard application.

Objectives

  • Modify a Steel Cross Section to account for Coating

  • Define Fire Load via Thermal Analysis

Continue the project

This tutorial is based on Thermal Analysis of a Steel Section (I-Profile). Please follow its initial instructions including Defining Cross Sections or continue with the already existing project and duplicate the cross section and change the name to ‘HEB 300 Coated’.

Preparing the cross section to account for coating

  1. Under SOFIPLUS Panel ‣ System ‣ Cross Sections double-click on the cross section you want to modify.

  2. Use SOFIPLUS Panel ‣ Cross Section Editor ‣ Common Elements ‣ Rolled Steel Shapes (Explode) and select the steel section.

  3. Use Autodesk Start Tab ‣ Draw ‣ Hatch Dropdown ‣ Boundary ‣ Object Type: Polyline ‣ OK, click inside the cross section and confirm with Enter.

  4. Use Autodesk Start Tab ‣ Modify ‣ Offset, enter thickness of coating and click outside of the cross section.

Defining coating material

  1. Add coating material to your project.

  2. Assign coating material to the outer boundary by clicking SOFIPLUS panel ‣ Boundary ‣ Select material no. 2 ‣ ‘POInt in area’ and click inside the area created by the offset.

Preparing edges for fire loads

This step is similar to Preparing edges for fire loads. The result for Method A should be this:

Defining fire load via thermal analysis

The following steps are once again similar to Thermal Analysis of a Steel Section (I-Profile).
